About me

Ekaterina BaranovaHi! My name is Katerina Morin. I’m a psychologist,
a birth doula and a childbirth educator. I’m fluent in English, Spanish and Russian and I understand French.
I was born in Russia, I’m married to a French-Canadian, and we live in Guatemala. The focus of my work is on changing our current birth culture – which is dominated by fear and violence – into a birth culture that is centered around honoring women and that recognizes the nature of women’s sacred function and
the importance of a birthing mother’s pleasure and psychological well-being.

I was lucky to learn about the possibility of orgasmic/ecstatic birth in 2011, before I conceived my children. This knowledge allowed me to prepare to for their coming into this world in a profound way. Having had a wonderful experience birthing both of my children,
I take a lot of pleasure in teaching women and helping them to create birthing experiences that are joyful, empowering, and confidence-boosting, experiences that give mothers a positive start to motherhood and make amazing memories they will want to keep all their lives.
In order to do this I rely on the teachings, resources and support of my famous mentors who are the leaders of the pleasurable birth movement Debra Pascali-Bonaro and Sheila Kamara Hay.

My goals and what drives my work:

Childbirth is a powerful experience. For many women it is more powerful than they could ever have imagined. Childbirth can empower us and help us trust in our own innate confidence and wisdom. Unfortunately, the experience of giving birth can also crash and victimize us. In Guatemala and all over the world, I have spoken with numerous women who had traumatic birth experiences, unnecessary c-sections (c-sections are performed at a staggering rate of  96% here in Guatemala!) and postpartum depression.

I believe this reality is the result of lack of awareness in women about the importance of preparing for childbirth, lack of resources, and an absence of adequate childbirth preparation classes in the area they live in. Another no less important reason for so many traumatic births around the world is that we are surrounded by a birth culture grounded in fear and avoidance of pain. Even among doctors themselves, there is often no understanding that the pleasure of a birthing woman with its unavoidable cascade of positive emotions is the most holistic birthing tool there is. Pleasure is also the key to a successful labor, is a pledge of successful motherhood, and therefore a pledge of the psychological well-being of our children. In order to for the birthing process to be wonderful and potent, I aspire to help increase the number of educated women in our society. Improved education will result in a greater demand for childbirth services that respect the desires and needs of the birthing woman and which understand and emphasize the important role positive emotions and emotional support play in the experience of a birthing woman. This will result in greater demand for childbirth services where medical decisions are made based on facts, on evidence-based medicine, and in an atmosphere that supports physically and psychologically safe outcomes for both women and their children.

Second time doulaI am in the process of creating a unique birth preparation course in Guatemala. I am deeply committed to helping women cope with common fears surrounding the birthing process and to debunk common myths about childbirth. My course provides a solid ground to women that will allow them to make informed decisions about the birthing process, including c-sections and VBACs. I foster joy in my clients and help women connect with their bodies’ innate wisdom and ability to enjoy the powerful process of giving birth. My course reveals how pleasure helps the birth process and teaches women how to experience positive (maybe even ecstatic or orgasmic) birth. This view is fundamentally different from the standards imposed on us in the media. It is also important for me to make this course affordable for women with different economic means.

I enjoy witnessing the spark that appears in the eyes of the women whose lives I touch, when in the midst of preparation for birth they shift their focus from pain and fear to pleasure and joy, when they get inspired to envision and create their own unique and beautiful experiences, come out of their birth experience empowered, inspired, satisfied, and ready to raise empowered, happy children. I sincerely hope that my birth preparation course allows me to see many more empowered women soon.

IMG_1872Mother Blessing Ceremony: This ceremony is an alternative to a traditional baby shower in that it focuses on the mother rather than on the baby. Mother Blessing is a beautiful ceremony created to spiritually support and empower the new mother for her journey of birthing and motherhood, dedicated to nurturing the mother, and filling her cup so it overflows with love and confidence as she awaits the impending birth of her baby, because a  woman who is given lots of love has more love to give in return. This ceremony is personally designed for each mother and provides a deeply meaningful and transformational experience for women, regardless of faith and of how they come to motherhood – by giving birth, through adoption, by becoming a foster mother or by marrying someone with a child.
